Preparing for Facelifts

While facelifts aren't considered major surgery, it is a surgical procedure and there are a number of things you can do to prepare beforehand. Your surgeon will be able to provide you with a comprehensive, personalized list to follow before and after surgery. So, what can you do ahead of time?

Quit Smoking of Any Other Use of Nicotine
Nicotine can hinder your recovery, so you should plan on cutting nicotine out of your daily routine at least two weeks before surgery - preferably six weeks before your facelift is scheduled. These activities include smoking, chewing nicotine gum, or using nicotine patches.
Avoid Taking Aspirin

Since aspirin thins your blood, taking it within the week before surgery may cause bleeding complications during the surgery. Avoid taking any aspirin for at least a week or two before your surgery is scheduled.

Get Your Blood Pressure under Control
High blood pressure and hypertension can cause recovery complications. If you suffer from high blood pressure, visit your doctor and get it under control before you schedule your surgery. It's important that facelifts are allowed to heal with as few complications as possible.
If You Dye Your Hair, Plan Ahead

Since you'll have incisions on the outer edges of your face, you will not be allowed to dye your hair for several weeks after surgery. Plan to dye your hair during the week before surgery.
Stock Up on Groceries, Prescriptions, and Other Items
You may not feel up to venturing out to the grocery store for a week or so after surgery, so it's best to stock up beforehand. Fill your refrigerator and pantry with easy-to-make meals and snacks. If you can, refill any prescription medications you'll need. Also, purchase some ice packs to help reduce swelling and bruising. That way you don't have to run out to the store or pharmacy in the days immediately following your procedure.

You'll also want to purchase a pillow, which will allow you to sleep on your back you're your head propped up comfortably. As far as clothing goes, you'll want to purchase a number of comfortable shirts which button down the front. Don't plan to pull anything over your head for a couple weeks while your face is recovering.

Cleanse Your Face before Heading to the Hospital
Before heading to your appointment, you'll probably want to take a shower and thoroughly cleanse your face. In fact, your surgeon may provide you with a special antibacterial soap to use before your procedure. After cleansing, don't apply any moisturizers or makeup to your skin.
Don't Plan to Drive Soon After Surgery

Arrange for a good friend or family member to take you home following your surgery. You may even wish to find someone to stay with you after your procedure. While facelifts aren't considered major, they do drain your energy and require rest and recovery time. You should probably plan on finding someone to drive you to your follow-up appointment also.
As with any medical procedure, planning ahead of time can speed up your recovery and make the entire process more relaxing.
